[We open on the morse code melody of the theme tune, and a montage of clips from the end of the world.]

(*All of these clips overlap and layer on top of each other - for clarity of reading they have been written sequentially.)

GERMAN NEWSREADER: Wir haben gerade Informationen darüber erhalten, dass den USA von den Wassermassen verschlungen worden ist.

BRITISH NEWSREADER 1: We’re getting reports that the USA is now underwater

AMERICAN PREACHER: Oh lord I am READY for the rapture!

PRESIDENT OF THE USA: In light of these extreme circumstances I have made the difficult decision, the most difficult decision of my life, to resign as President of the United States of America.

CANTONESE NEWSREADER: fung1bou6 zing3zoi6 ci4zuk6 zang1koeng4 風暴正在持續增強

BELGIAN NEWSREADER: Nous recevons des rapports indiquant que les États-Unis d'Amérique sont complètement submergés

AMERICAN NEWSREADER: Britain is now completely submerged in what some are calling a stroke of ‘divine irony’

AMERICAN PERSON: What do you mean London is underwater?

CHILD: Mommy I’m scared!

SCOTTISH NEWSREADER: The storm is only getting bigger

SPANISH NEWSREADER: Nunca se ha visto algo como esto

ENGLISH PERSON: Breaking news everyone, I’m gay!

AMERICAN PREACHER: Rain, they said that rain would come down in a mighty flood to punish us from on high

ENGLISH PERSON: Look, I’m aware there’s a weather warning, but this dinner party cannot be rescheduled.

TAGALOG NEWSREADER: Kakatanggap namin ng balita na ang United States of America ay buong-buong lubog sa ilalim ng karagatan.

ENGLISH PERSON: This is it! It’s the end of the world!

ENGLISH PERSON: Hey chap, why’s it raining so hard?

ITALIAN TV PRESENTER: No, non c'é nessuno a Venezia. There is no one in Venice. It is... vuota - it is empty.

ENGLISH TV PRESENTER: Ok, we all know what the real problem with this flooding is: small boat crossings

ENGLISH PERSON: Keep posting here, keep, keep this community…positive, but I’m so scared

ENGLISH MUSICIAN: One more song! For the end of the world!

ENGLISH PUNDIT: It is just a little bit of bad weather. The real problem that we need to focus on right now is transgender people.

ENGLISH PERSON: I never fucking loved you anyway

AMERICAN PODCASTER: We’ve all borne witness to the unimaginable tragedy of the past few hours, but we have to ask ourselves what is the world going to look like moving forward?

ENGLISH TV PRESENTER: You know the stuff we’re seeing here is absolutely ridiculous and clearly a sign that global warming is completely out of control. Even scientists could not have predicted that things would get this bad.

ENGLISH PERSON: Ok so if you could just let me finish my point, every major mythology, every major religion, in some way discusses some form of cleansing, uh

AMERICAN PERSON: Hey baby. I think I’m going to be late getting home tonight. I love you

[The montage fades to focus on this last voice. They speak softly and tenderly. The music comes in. There’s the sound of thunder and heavy rain as we transition to join Noor in her plane, fighting the storm.]

NOOR: [Effort sounds - struggling to pull the plane up, fighting the G-force on her, sobs of pain and exhaustion]

[The greatest storm that ever was. The storm that drowns the world. Tsunamis, thunderclaps, hurricanes, howling roaring wind, shattering ice, thundering hail rain that falls like a dam has burst in heaven.]

NOOR: (Exhausted, hoarse, still fighting with all her might) The only person who decides when I’m finished is me! And I’m not finished yet.

[A mighty, violent thunder clap. A sudden, broken bone snap of steel torn in half. The scream of the engine as the plane plunges from the sky. A massive crash and an explosion.]

NOOR: (Screams) We hear the wreckage of the plane floating in the ocean. Nothing else. Then silence.

[A Scottish voice, not Finn’s, heavily distorted by static, as if heard from a great distance.]

[REDACTED]: The Bird Roads. Act Three. Part One.

[A calm, gentle lapping of waves and creaks of broken metal, jostled in the water. Squeaking groans, varying in pitch as the metal tears. Crunching broken glass grinding against the steel.]

NOOR: (Slowly returning to consciousness, strapped into her mutilated plane, rocked by the waves)

[Waking up sounds - pain]...

[The metal around Noor sounds claustrophobic now, it surrounds us, trapping her in the water as she fights it.]

NOOR: (Panicked) Oh Fuck.

NOOR: [Sudden cry of pain - she has a nasty gash across her stomach which just tore open]

[Brief underwater chaos - Noor tumbling beneath the carcass of the plane, thumping the metal carriage, pushing through the fabric of a now useless parachute. Everything is strangely muffled as she submerges.]

NOOR: [Desperate, muffled underwater efforts]

[After an achingly long time, NOOR breaks the surface, gasping for air]

NOOR: [Gasping for air, coughing up seawater]

[Furious, upset, NOOR beats at the broken plane]

NOOR: (Various effort sounds: furious, exhausted, pained. Various words in the following monologue are punctuated with these efforts.) NO! No. This is not how I die! This is not how it ends. I had a LIFE. I had a life and a cat and two beautiful people who I loved and I was finally ready to actually settle down and marry them and then you decided to drown the fucking world? What kind of sick joke is this? I want forests and deserts and mountains the colour of sunsets, I want a cottage and a farm and chickens and, and fruit trees. You do not get to kill me like this! Motherfucking cunt!

[Winded, Noor clings onto the shattered plane, catching her breath. The plane creaks and groans around her. As she talks we hear metal and glass crunch as she hits it.]

NOOR: [Breathless, exhausted. She starts hopeless but warms up with sheer spite] No. My name is Noor Latif and I said no. Do you hear me? I am going to get my world back, I am going to find the people I love and I am going to fix this stupid fucking plane. If Matt Damon can grow potatoes on Mars I can fix a plane with no supplies in the middle of the ocean. I can do this. Inshallah. I can do this.

[Noor heaves herself up onto the wreck of the plane]

NOOR: [Huge effort, like climbing out of a swimming pool but in the ocean onto a broken plane with a stomach wound]

NOOR: I can do this.

[We fade in on the sound of a wrench hitting metal.]

[Noor is hammering at part of the plane with a wrench, increasingly frustrated, hitting it harder and harder, faster and faster, until she furiously throws the wrench into the sea.]

NOOR: [Efforts, as above]

[Dainty plop of the wrench into the ocean. Noor realises she doesn’t have a wrench any more.]

NOOR: (Quietly, to herself) Oh, fuck…

NOOR: (Crying with exhaustion) I can’t do this.

[Big heavy thump as Noor falls onto her back, back into the pilot seat and stares up at the sky

Music begins softly under this monologue, quiet and anticipatory, as if building towards something. The waves rock beneath us, quietly hushing and lapping at the plane wreck.]

NOOR: Aster. Are you up there? Can I see you, even now? Are you my shooting star, looking down at all of us stupid little humans? I hate you, by the way. I hate you for leaving us. For leaving me. For being big strong Aster Slater, too smart and too kind and too damn brave for your own good. I hate you for doing the right thing not the thing that would have let you stay. I hate how much I miss you, and how much I wish you were here. I hate that you would know what to do. You would know how to find Finn. You would know how to fix this fucking aeroplane. You would make it all make sense.

[LONG BEAT]

NOOR: Aster?

[LONG BEAT]

NOOR: I don’t hate you.
